What Is A Father?

Today I have been pondering upon this great question. I am afraid that my Dad doesn't get the celebration he deserves on this great day because every so often (such as this year) he share this day with my Mom's birthday. My Dad is the most selfless person. That is a key piece to Fatherhood. Even though he has every right to be the center of celebration, he will brush it aside and put all focus on my Mom. This is not the only example of the many times he gives others credit or praise when he did so much himself. All growing up, my Dad has been my biggest supporter. I wondered as a teenager if I disappointed my Dad by not playing sports. I chose to dance instead. I quickly learned that it didn't matter to my Dad what I chose to excel in, he was there to support me 100%. I don't remember a single dance performance or piano recital or guitar recital or whatever that he missed...because he didn't. Every single week of my mission I received a letter from my Dad...no fail.

The Family: A Proclamation to the World states, "By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families." My Dad has and continues to fulfill that role every day. I look to him for advice, for counsel, and for love. I know that through his quiet acts of support and interest that he loves me more than he ever has to express. I am grateful for a Father who I know is worthy to hold and use his Priesthood. I go to him for blessings often and never have to wonder if I should ask someone else. I have no doubt that my Daddy loves his family and the gospel. Those are the two topics that always choke him up when he talks about them. I feel very fortunate to have the greatest example of a Father in my life and know that will make it that much harder for the Father of my own children to live up to. I love you, Daddy!
