I absolutely LOVE Spring Break!! Maybe that's why I have to be in the world of education. I've become quite used to my holiday breaks and my summers off. There are definitely some great pros to being a teacher!
This year I was so blessed to enjoy my Spring Break with my sister and her husband in New York City! I took a red eye flight Saturday night and arrived bright and early Easter morning. Before getting any sleep I was able to have a great chat with my sis then get ready and go to church. I struggled to keep my eyes open but am glad I went. After church we celebrated Easter by decorating eggs and enjoying a fantastic meal!!
Most of the week was centered around getting cheap tickets to see Newsies on Broadway. As soon as I learned that my childhood favorite movie was on Broadway I knew I needed to be there! Megan and I were outside the theater every time there was a show with our names in the lotto hoping one of us would get drawn. Monday night was our first try with no luck. So Megs and I decided to go to a movie. We grabbed some Chipotle burritos and enjoyed Mirror Mirror.
On Tuesday, Megan introduced me to a fun cupcake shop with some amazing cupcake flavors. I ordered the peanut butter cup (surprise, surprise) and Megan go the salty carmel. Both so good!!
Wednesday was a double shot try for Newsies tickets. There was a matinee showing and an evening showing. Again, we were there early hoping one of our names would be drawn. We went with such positive thoughts and were for sure this was our day. But to no avail! Again we walked away empty handed even with Shane coming for the evening drawing to help our odds.
To make us feel better Megan and I enjoyed Time Square...specifically the huge Toys R Us. Good times!
Then we went to Cafe Lalo for dinner. For those You've Got Mail fans, this is the cafe where Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks are supposed to meet for the first time. It is such a cute cafe and the food was fantastic! Megan and I raved about it for hours after.
All week I got to enjoy my mornings while Megan was at work. I slept in, read my scriptures, and got to jog along the Hudson River. It was gorgeous! So on Thursday Megan and I took a walk in Riverside park to get some pics of the beauty.
Then we met up with Shane for dinner at the Dinosaur BBQ in Harlem. We were always glad when Shane was able to join us. He was so busy all week with his work.
On Friday Megan and I explored Columbus Circle but most especially discovered and enjoyed Waffles and Dinges. This is a street cart that really does sell the BEST waffles I've ever tasted. Megan and I shared a waffle with unlimited toppings. We chose nutella, bananas, strawberries, and speculoos (this is a gingerbread cookie spread that is honestly so amazing!!!!) We were in absolute heaven eating that thing and were ready to stalk the cart for the rest of the trip.
That night we found ourselves yet again outside the Nederlander Theatre. We put our names in with all the hope in the world and were ready to consign ourselves to standing room spots as they got to the end of calling names. Then three from the end I hear, "Kara Lee Robinson" and I scream...literally!! Those around us were impressed with my reaction and it was completely sincere!
After getting our tickets we ate at this fabulous vegetarian restaurant and then got a shake at the Shake Shack for dessert. There is so much good food in New York! I love food!
And of course the next three hours found me with a perma-grin as I watched 4 of my So You Think You Can Dance dancers (Jess, Evan, Alex, and Thayne) all on stage at Newsies performing one of the BEST shows on Broadway!!!
Saturday was my last day, which made it a sad day. But we lived it up! The weather was gorgeous so we rode the Staten Island Ferry to see the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty.
After the ferry ride we wondered through the financial district because I'd never enjoyed that portion of the city yet.
Then we went to the World Trade Center Memorial. It was beautiful and peaceful and honestly a great place to ponder the tragedy that took place there.
I was sure sad to leave New York and especially leave Megan and Shane. Their hospitality was over and above and I had such a fantastic week!! Thanks Megs and Shane!! Let's do it again soon!!
