Christmas 2009

Christmas is never the same without little kids and their excitement. As with other years, I am the little kid at home and can't say I bring the same excitement but I still feel there is something about Christmas that is magical.

My parents and I enjoyed Christmas Eve at a neighbor's house. The evening was full of good food and good people. We also enjoyed reading the Christmas story...from both the Book of Mormon and the Bible...and then sharing some of our own favorite Christmas' from the past. It got me thinking about so many that I have enjoyed. We have always had fantastic traditions at our house that mean a lot to me. I try to implement them even without having my own family. A treasured tradition is our advent calendar. I love reading a story each night during the month of December to help get me in the spirit of giving and love. I have even in the past invited friends over each night to enjoy the tradition with me.

Christmas morning this year was unique and for that reason very special. For some odd reason I still woke up at 6am (we used to wake up at 4am to go downstairs and see what Santa brought but we couldn't wake up Mom and Dad until 6am) and was blessed to have my Mom wake up with me. We wanted to let my Dad sleep so we enjoyed a very treasured conversation until around 8am when Dad joined us. I feel fortunate to have best friends as parents. We opened our presents under the tree and feel so grateful for such wonderful and thoughtful family and friends. (Please ignore the no make-uped faces. We don't have the tradition to get ready for Christmas morning.)Then we decided to try a Christmas tradition Megan and Shane have started in their marriage. Megan emailed us the recipe for Maple Walnut Scones so we made them and eggs. It was delicious and fun.Dad played our Christmas song duets with me and we enjoyed the spirit of music. The rest of the morning was spent on the phone talking to the rest of the family and hearing about their Christmas' and presents Santa brought. I am grateful for such wonderful family. I would have loved to have us all together but appreciate that we can still communicate and enjoy each other on these special days.
